Zvezda 6170 Bofors 40mm AA Gun Mk 1/2 with Crew – 1:72 WWII Model Kit

ONE GUN. MULTIPLE ARMIES. MULTIPLE WWII THEATERS.

Add one of the most famous anti-aircraft weapons of World War II to your collection with the Zvezda 6170 Bofors 40mm Mk 1/2 in 1:72 scale.

Designed in Sweden by AB Bofors, the 40mm Bofors became one of the most successful and widely used anti-aircraft guns of the Second World War. It was adopted, manufactured, licensed, or supplied to numerous nations — including Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union and many other Allied countries.

That makes this little 1:72 scale gun remarkably versatile for WWII modelers, diorama builders and tabletop wargamers.

A Bofors FOR ALMOST ANY WWII SCENARIO

The Bofors 40mm was not limited to one army or one battlefield.

🇬🇧 BRITISH & COMMONWEALTH FORCES
Use it with British forces across a wide range of European, Mediterranean, African and Pacific campaigns.

🇺🇸 UNITED STATES FORCES
The American military produced and extensively used the Bofors, particularly in naval and anti-aircraft roles. U.S. Navy Bofors guns became especially important in defending ships and fleets against Japanese aircraft and kamikaze attacks.

🇷🇺 SOVIET FORCES
The Soviet Union received large quantities of Bofors 40mm guns through Allied Lend-Lease, making the weapon a legitimate choice for Eastern Front gaming as well.

🇯🇵 JAPANESE CAPTURED EQUIPMENT
Here's where the story gets particularly interesting for Pacific gamers.

When Singapore fell in 1942, Japanese forces captured British Bofors 40mm guns. The Japanese subsequently studied the weapon and developed their own Type 5 40mm anti-aircraft gun based on the Bofors design.

For historical or scenario-based gaming, a Bofors model can therefore also represent captured Allied equipment in appropriate Japanese-controlled territories and Pacific scenarios.

🎨 PAINTING CAPTURED JAPANESE BOFORS — THE LIKELY COLORS

There isn't a single, well-documented "official" paint color for captured British Bofors guns in Japanese service. Captured equipment was often repainted with whatever was available locally, so the finish could vary significantly.

Based on Japanese painting practices for land-based artillery, you have a few plausible options:

Artillery Brown / Tea-Brown (茶褐色)
This was a primary color for Japanese ordnance. Historical documents from the 1930s mention the use of "tea-brown" (茶褐色) paint for weapons, and modelers often refer to a standard "Japanese Artillery Brown" for this type of equipment.

Camouflage Colors
If the gun was given a camouflage pattern, official guidelines from 1943 specified the use of earth-grass (土草色), earth (土地色), withered-grass (枯草色), and grass (草色) colors for both mobile and fixed weapons.

Improvised / Repainted
Since these were captured guns, they may have simply been repainted with whatever stocks were on hand. This makes an exact match difficult, but a brown or green-earth tone is your safest bet for historical plausibility.

💡 MODELING TIP
For your Zvezda kit, a color like Tamiya XF-72 (JGSDF Brown) or a mix of dark earth and olive drab would be a good starting point for an "Artillery Brown" look. You could also add a simple two-tone camouflage using earth brown and a dark green to suggest a field-painted finish.

PERFECT FOR WWII WARGAMING

Because the Bofors served with so many nations, this model offers enormous flexibility for tabletop gaming.

Use it as:

🇬🇧 British anti-aircraft artillery
🇺🇸 American anti-aircraft artillery
🇷🇺 Soviet Lend-Lease equipment
🇨🇦 Commonwealth forces
🇦🇺 Australian forces
🇳🇿 Other Allied formations equipped with Bofors guns
🎯 Captured equipment in appropriate Axis or Japanese scenarios
🗺️ Static battlefield or airfield defense
⚔️ Objective or scenario-specific artillery
🏝️ Pacific Theater installations
🌍 European, Mediterranean, North African or Eastern Front battlefields

For Memoir '44 players, the model can be particularly useful when building custom scenarios, historical campaigns and battlefield displays where a physical representation of the anti-aircraft position adds visual detail and atmosphere.
